What is skin barrier?

In the realm of skincare, the “skin barrier” refers to the outermost layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum, along with the components that contribute to its structure and function. It acts as a protective barrier between the internal layers of the skin and the external environment.

The skin barrier consists of various components, including ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, which are collectively known as the lipid matrix. These lipids create a dense and organised structure that forms the building blocks of the skin barrier. The lipid matrix acts as a cement-like substance, holding the skin cells together and providing strength and stability to the skin barrier.

When the skin barrier is compromised, it may lead to various skin issues, such as dryness, sensitivity and inflammation. Factors like harsh skincare products, environmental stressors, ageing, and certain skin conditions can disrupt the integrity of the skin barrier.

What does the skin barrier do?

  1. Protection: The skin barrier acts as a physical barrier that shields the skin from external aggressors, such as pollutants, UV radiation, and microorganisms. It helps prevent these harmful substances from penetrating into the deeper layers of the skin.
  2. Moisture Retention: The skin barrier plays a crucial role in preventing excessive water loss from the skin. It helps to maintain optimal hydration levels by sealing in moisture and preventing dehydration.
  3. Defence Against Irritants: A healthy skin barrier helps defend against irritants and allergens by reducing their ability to penetrate the skin. It helps minimise potential inflammatory responses and sensitivity.
  4. Maintenance of pH Balance: An optimal pH level supports the growth of beneficial bacteria and helps to protect against harmful microorganisms.

Skincare tips for protection

Protecting the skin barrier involves adopting a skincare routine that promotes its health and integrity.

  1. Gentle Cleansing: Opt for mild, non-stripping cleansers that effectively cleanse the skin without disrupting its natural oils. Avoid harsh soaps or cleansers with strong detergents that can strip away the skin’s protective lipids.
  2. Moisturise Daily: Moisturising is crucial for maintaining optimal hydration and reinforcement. Choose moisturisers with ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid to help seal in moisture.
  3. Sun Protection: Shielding your skin from harmful UV radiation is vital. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50 every day, even on cloudy days, and cover up with protective clothing and accessories when exposed to the sun for extended periods.
  4. Avoid Over-Exfoliation: Exfoliating can be beneficial, but excessive or harsh exfoliation can disrupt the skin. Limit exfoliation to 1-2 times per week and choose gentle exfoliants that won’t cause excessive irritation or damage.
  5. Avoid Prolonged Hot Showers: Long, hot showers or baths can strip the skin of its natural oils. Opt for shorter, lukewarm showers and pat dry your skin gently with a towel instead of rubbing vigorously.
  6. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can negatively impact the skin barrier and overall skin health. Practice stress management techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in activities you enjoy.
